Woke up late? Need to be out the door in 15 minutes? Here are some hair tips you can do to look polished in no time at all.

Dry Shampoo is the best way to get another day out of your style. This hair product sucks up the oil and gives you body with just a spray. Spray towards your roots and up the shaft. Let sit for a minute and then shake out. If your hair still looks oily in spots, respray those areas and shake again. Then either brush, comb or work with your fingers. You’re set!

If you absolutely have to wash your hair, skip the conditioner and use some leave-in conditioner after towel drying. Then blow dry just your front and sides. The rest will air dry.

Roots or gray showing and you’re presenting to an important group of people? Since there’s no time to do a touchup, use a color wand or brush. They last for the day and wash out easily.

If all else fails and you have medium or long hair, you can always pull it back in a low ponytail or twist. Using a headband also helps.

Look your best no matter what!

It’s that time of year again; time to go to the company holiday party or event. Do you struggle sometimes with what to wear or are you always spot on? Read on for ideas on what to wear to this important annual event.

Ah, the company party, it can be a minefield of bad choices or a diamond mine of networking opportunities. The most important thing to remember is that this is a business function no matter how it’s touted. Your top management will be there, along with Human Resources and like it or not, they will be keeping notes (usually in their head) of anyone who’s inappropriate. This includes getting drunk and acting wild or making passes at the boss.

Even though it’s party time, you want to still look the part of the person of excellence you’ve worked so hard to attain. Why lose your management’s and coworkers’ respect just so you can show the “real you”?

Men: depending on the venue, a suit may be appropriate or a shirt and fun tie. Unless it’s a very casual venue and event, skip the jeans. Athletic shoes are not stylish or appropriate.

Women: keep the deep cleavage and/or extreme minis for your personal engagements. Pick a dress that’s a maximum of several inches above the knee, or try something different and wear a maxi dress or skirt. You’ll turn heads.

Choose a top that isn’t see through and doesn’t reveal the majority of your chest. As a recent person commented on my blog, too much cleavage costs you respect. Is the respect you’ve earned worth losing?

Bling it out with multiple long necklaces or chunky shorter ones. Sparkly earrings are eye catching and a great cocktail ring or bangles are always in vogue.

Shoes, shoes, shoes: don’t forget the shoes! As long as you can navigate in them, the higher the better! If you’re wearing a skirt, pair it with some fun tights in festive colors or textures.

Bottom line: have fun and look the part of someone who deserves to and should be promoted.

Let’s start with clothes you may have worn in the past or even wear now that are never appropriate for a professional environment: Halter tops, miniskirts, shirts that expose your stomach, low cut tops, shorts, low cut jeans, any pants that reveal your underwear, any top sheer enough to see your bra through, sweatpants, pajama bottoms, workout wear (unless you’re in athletics, a personal trainer or a health club)

Well, what can you wear?

Unless you’re in an ultra-conservative industry or company, have fun with colors and prints. Show your personality using bright colors you enjoy such as purple, yellow or red.

If you normally wear leggings or skinny jeans, choose pants that have a narrower (not tight) silhouette.

Shirts can be trendy and fun without being revealing. Choose from fun shapes and prints including ones with bell sleeves or shirts with a band around the hips.

Your shoes and accessories can also convey your youth. Think fun lace up boots and peep toes. Pair them with colorful or patterned tights or wear fun (not character) socks in the same color family. Jewelry can be chunky or long (or both) depending on your style.

Build your wardrobe to show you’re young but still professional and ready to make your mark.

If you’re on the way to a game or playing in a game, by all means, wear your favorite team garments (with no holes or stains).

If you’re not participating in one of those activities, please refrain from leaving the house in them. They’re not appropriate in the business world.

Think about it. How many professional athletes do you see wearing sports garb in everyday life? Uh, from what I’ve seen, they dress very nicely-cashmere sweaters, button down shirts and if they’re very casual, they wear very nice jeans and an upscale t-shirt (with no mention of sports on it).

Move up a level: leave sports team wear for sport activities.

Color is measured using 3 different traits:

Hue-the undertone-this determines whether a color is cool, blue-based or warm, yellow-based. A color, such as red, can be either warm, tomato or cool, maroon, depending on its undertone. 

Value-the depth-is determined by the lightness or darkness a color has. If a color, such as blue, has a lot of black in it, it will obviously be darker, such as navy. If it contains more white, it will be lighter such as baby blue.

Chroma-the clarity-this shows how much light a color reflects. This determines how bright or vibrant colors are. A bright color, like fuchsia reflects a lot of light where a more muted color, such as dusty rose, reflects much less.

A color analysis looks at the hue, value and chroma of many colors next to your skin tone, hair and eyes to characterize your “season” of best family of colors.

This process is equally effective used for both men and women.

Enjoy color and use it to your advantage!

I found 3 brands (there are probably more) that use a clear formula. I bought and tried each one of them and here are my thoughts.

big sexy hair – This is quite pricey and does a nice job. No gray chunks but it makes your hair really coarse and almost like one big mass. I’m not a hair professional but I am following the instructions. If you brush it really well, it does even out but there’s not much shine. It’s worth trying.

TRESemme FreshStart – This is a very economical price but doesn’t do the trick. I followed the instructions and my hair felt and looked no different so I tried another application (more is always better!); no change. I gave up for that time and used big sexy hair. I tried again another day and got the same result-no change. It may work differently on your hair so since it’s low priced, give it a try.

SG  Salon Grafix – I found this brand at Sally Beauty Supply. It was cheaply priced and I thought, what the heck, let’s give it a whirl. I followed the directions and to my amazement, it worked quite well. No white residue; sucked the oil out of my hair and didn’t make it a solid mass. It was somewhat chunky but I think that comes with the territory. It’s now my favorite dry shampoo. I recommend it.

If you can’t go more than one day without shampooing, and you’d like to go longer, try dry shampoo. It may allow you to shampoo less and save your hair from unnecessary wear and tear. Let me know what your favorite brand is.

I was invited by Rachel Glaszcz, Producer on WTMJ 4 to be the guest on “What’s Hot?” on October 1st. “What’s Hot?” is a segment that talks about the hottest topics of the day. I was honored to be invited and wanted to do my best.

This was my first time on TV and I was nervous so I asked Rachel what I could do to prepare. She was kind enough to suggest I come down, visit the station and meet everyone beforehand. I went the day before my appearance and I’m so glad I did. Rachel introduced me to everyone, let me sit in the control room and let me sit on set off camera so I could get a feel for everything. She was so nice and so was everyone she introduced me to. When you think of celebrities, sometimes you think of divas but I can truthfully tell you, there wasn’t a diva in the bunch! Everyone went out of their way to make me feel welcome and comfortable. They were awesome!

Jon Anne Willow, the guest on Thursday, when I visited, is a regular on the show and a total pro. She is a natural and makes it look effortless. Jon Anne introduced herself to me (while she was sitting in the chair waiting to go on!) and was so incredibly nice. After she was done with the segment she came over so we could talk further and she told me not to worry, that I would do fine. She was so supportive! She gave me makeup tips and many other tips to succeed. Thank you Jon Anne! Jon Anne has an online magazine, thirdcoastdigest.com . Make sure you check it out!

I ran into Shelley Walcott while I was there and she was also so kind. I told her of my nervousness and she spent time telling me ways to get rid of it and be confident. Whether you can believe it or not, she’s even more beautiful in person than on TV (if that’s possible).

I want to thank Rachel for inviting me, Rodney the producer on set, Courtney, George, Jeff, Brian and everyone else at channel 4 for being so kind to me. I really enjoyed my appearance and the interaction with everyone.
